The safest way is to never work on the original PST file first. Make a copy of the locked PST and try any password removal process on that copy only.

If you still remember the password, open the PST in Outlook and remove the password from file settings. That is the cleanest method.

But if the password is forgotten, Outlook will not give a simple way to open it....
