In Milan’s Repubblica district, on the fifth floor of a 1930s Rationalist building designed by Giovanni Muzio, Moitié Studio has reimagined a 150-square-metre apartment where architectural heritage and contemporary sensibility coexist with remarkable ease. Founded by architects Francesco Gennaro and Giorgia Rossi, the studio approached the renovation with restraint rather than excess. The aim was to restore continuity between spaces, enhance natural light and shape a home that feels both sophisticated and welcoming – one capable of reflecting the identity and lifestyle of its owners.

The clients, who work in finance and spent many years living in London, wanted the apartment to echo the atmosphere of elegant London homes: intimate yet fluid interiors, warm materials, understated classicism and a discreet sense of comfort. Rather than a literal reference, the project translates this influence through proportions, textures and carefully calibrated details.

The intervention focuses primarily on the entrance and living area, entirely reconfigured through three architectural volumes that turn existing constraints into defining features. A large curved structure clad in Phillip Jeffries silk organises the entrance and lounge, integrating storage and sliding panels edged in brass. Two matching walnut bookcases soften the architectural gesture, introducing a more personal and lived-in dimension. A palette of cream tones and natural materials enhances the apartment’s luminosity while establishing continuity with the restored original parquet flooring.

In the living room, the furnishings contribute to a refined yet relaxed atmosphere: the Magi chaise longue by Flexform, Augusto sofas by Molteni&C, an ivory rug by CC-Tapis and Maxalto coffee tables strike a balance between comfort and formal rigour. Even the structural pillar at the entrance has been reinterpreted as a functional feature, integrated into a composition that echoes the original ceiling mouldings. In the dining area, Poliform’s Henry table with a Calacatta Viola top sits alongside the iconic Wishbone Chairs by Carl Hansen & Søn, while a reflective extra-clear mirrored volume conceals a walnut bar and the entrance to the sleeping quarters, amplifying both light and depth. Entirely custom made, the kitchen offers a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional London kitchens, combining walnut detailing, stone accents and a compact, composed layout. More intimate in tone is the master bedroom, where Sandberg wallpaper, textiles by Society Limonta and Dedar, and Louis Poulsen pendant lights create a quiet, enveloping atmosphere.
