I find the whole thing fascinating.My experience of Greene King is their IPA which was complete pisse d'âne at around 99p a pint some ten years or so ago.That they should brew a stock ale at 12% abv and then blend it with another's (albeit acquired) beer to make a very premium beer is encouraging to say the least. So, in a development that will shock no-one, especially not me, it turns out I was talking balderdash. Old Crafty Hen is a blend of Old Speckled Hen and Greene King 5X, ergo it can't possibly pre- date the takeover. I think I was getting confused with Hens Tooth. Or just getting confused.

I think Morland was assimilated by the Borg in 2000, before that they did OSHen and Hen's Tooth, but not sure about the OCHen. They also did a beer called Old Masters and I'm sure I've seen a recipe credited to Greene King for Old Master Hen, there again, it might have been the goblins talking while I was trying to sleep. Found it. I'd love to try it, too.

If I'm remembering correctly, it used to be called something else. Don't be surprised if I'm totally wrong, though. I'm probably getting confused with a totally different beer and brewery, knowing me.

I like Old Crafty Hen, and I'm not totally sure about this, but I think it is the only one in the Speckled Hen range, apart from Speckled Hen itself obviously, that has it's roots in a original Morlands product.
