Hello CSR! Welcome to Brian Answers, your weekly Panthers fan mailbag for everyone! This week got a bit overtaken by movie talk, which is honestly fine with me. We’re at the point in the off-season where all we can do is speculate on OTA reps and depth charts, so sometimes its great to take a break and just have a conversation in the community. And like I always say, this is YOUR place to ask your questions, whether they be Panthers related, football related, or even completely off topic. I feel we really captured the essence of what this column is supposed to be this week. So read on for my answers to all your questions!

How did you feel at the time about the trade for Bryce Young?

Good_Ol_Boy: Which of Kevin Costner’s many sports-related movies do you like best?

I think these are easy ones, but Field of Dreams and For the Love of the Game are personal favorites. One that popped up in the comments was Draft Day. I have to be honest; I HATED that movie. It was super unrealistic as far as the trades that happened. They may have nailed the draft room scenes as far as authenticity, but I don’t see any way in reality that the big trade to get his picks back would EVER happen in the actual NFL. None of it made sense to me.

GooseCreek: Carolina is going to bring in an ex player to assist in evaluating the large crop of QBs coming into the NFL via the next draft. Who do you bring in? Delhomme? Newton? Kuechly?

I think Luke Kuechly is the easiest answer, just because he’s such a film junkie that he’d be able to have a real conversation with the guy about most of the on field things. And it would be a really fun conversation to unpack if they did end up drafting someone. Second choice would be Greg Olsen, the dude also just gets it from an on field perspective and clearly made an effort to understand his QBs when he was in Carolina. He was a great player athletically, but he definitely developed a connection with his QBs, and that’s something you have to do mentally, not just physically.

schrodingersblackcat: Brian, what is the all-time greatest action movie?

What are five movies (across any/all genres) that would easily make your personal all-time Top 10 list?

I went ahead and linked your question because it started a really cool discussion in the comments. I’m going to respond in several ways because, this is my forum and quite frankly I can.

Yes, Aliens is absolutely up there. I don’t think I need to elaborate much aside from that it is a classic that perfectly melded some horror with action. The original Predator falls into the same vein. The Matrix and Reloaded I also hold in high regard, because they changed the game. The MCU Avengers was also one that I saw so many times, I know that’s a main stream choice but that original amalgamation of movies all building to that one action classic was just such a ride to experience.

My off the cuff pick simply because of the experience, is a movie called Ninja Assassin. My reason is simple; I went with a friend to see this film, and all we wanted to see that night was some cheesy movie where a Ninja messes some people up. And we got everything we could have ever wanted and more. It was insanely good for such a simple premise. I encourage all action fans to watch it with no expectations because it was just fun.

As far as your second question goes , here’s my list, in no particular order. I decided to twist the question slightly into “movies that could make my top ten that you might not have seen”, just because there were so many other phenomenal answers and I figure repeating them isn’t as fun!

The Disaster Artist: One of my favorite bad movies of all time is The Room, and I read the biography (The Disaster Artist) that was created as a result of said bad movie. The Disaster Artist was special because it perfectly articulated the absolute insanity behind the making of The Room, and the absolute enigma Tommy Wiseau. Really good way to bring the book to life, and James Franco’s delivery of Tommy Wiseau as a character in the film is just… brilliant.
The Orphanage (2007): Its a horror film, I don’t want to spoil anything, but for fans of the genre, absolutely go watch that and do not read anything about the plot.
500 Days of Summer-Joseph Gordon-Levitt is a guilty pleasure of mine, and I saw this film at the very end of high school. A story about a failed relationship that I think we’ve always needed more of in film.
Halloween (original): Just classic. Paved the way for those types of films. Sorry to delve into horror as much but hey, big whoop, wanna fight about it?
Backrooms: I decided to include a recent title as well just for kicks. I have followed along with several popular Youtube video series in this realm, and this movie really did it for me as far as both delivering on established lore, and adding to it in a meaningful way. It definitely helps to go back and watch some of the Youtube videos that helped create this movie, but it is not required viewing to appreciate what this film was trying to do.

JakeNCVA: What are the top 5 sports themed movies?

I’m not bold enough to give you a definitive top 5, but some my top ones not previously mentioned are (in no particular order): Rookie of the Year, Dodgeball, The Longest Yard, Moneyball, and the Rocky Films (Creed included).

Revshawn: What is your home defense plan to survive the zombie apocalypse?

Go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for this all to blow over.

DeacCat: The over/under for Panthers wins next year is 6.5. Considering the Panther’s schedule, and replacing rose colored glasses with the green visor, would you take the over or under?

I’m taking the over right now. The Panthers won enough games I never expected them to win last season, so I think that trend still sticks. They will also lose games we expect them to win, but the schedule is tough enough that there’s more games I’d expect them to lose than win, and many that should be close. That logic tracks, right?

Bruce Guild: Dan Morgan already the Panthers greatest GM? If not what more will it take?

I’m definitely coming around to the idea. He’s assembled quite a group in the front office and his strategy and approach to the off-season has been consistent and so far, effective. I’m willing to give him some rope following the disaster in 2023, since then he’s both attacked free agency aggressively and drafted in a forward-thinking way that will benefit the franchise years down the line. Need to see how this 2026 draft class pans out first, but he definitely seems to have a defined vision for how the franchise should look now, and in the future. As other commenters have said, navigating Bryce Young’s situation will be the biggest hurdle in his time as GM. But I’m already very happy they pulled the trigger and paid Jalen Coker yesterday, and I LOVE listening to Morgan talk about his decisions as a GM and what he’s trying to build. It obviously may not work out, but at least we can see the vision. They focus on the trenches and build around that, and so far I like the approach.
