Contemporary art takes over Buenos Aires this week as NODO returns with more than 65 galleries participating in a citywide circuit stretching from La Boca to Recoleta. Elsewhere, football history unfolds among cemetery monuments, Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver celebrates its 50th anniversary on the big screen, and horror auteur Ari Aster arrives for a festival dedicated to film nightmares.

NODO Art Circuit

More than 65 contemporary art galleries will open their doors to the public this weekend across Buenos Aires as part of NODO, a three-day art circuit through Retiro, San Telmo, La Boca and Recoleta, featuring some of the finest local artists working today.

Created in 2022 and organized by Meridiano, NODO features a wide range of creative disciplines, including abstract painting, surrealist sculpture, experimental textiles, and digital photography. The program also includes interactive events such as live musical sets, educational visits led by museum experts, and intimate conversations with artists.

Sidebar event La Noche del Arte y la Gastronomía will take place in Recoleta, where design and fashion shops will turn into galleries between 6 and 8 p.m. Afterwards, a selection of restaurants in the area offer special menus and benefits.

It is with much confidence that we say that no city in the world blends partying and literature quite as well as Buenos Aires. Point in case: La Francachela. This street party organized by used books store Aristipo Libros has music, empanadas, wine, good books, beautiful people, and everything else you could want on a Saturday night filled with alcohol and education.

And because the party never really stops at 1:30 a.m. there’s a post-Francachela at La Quince Cultural Space (Corrientes 5426) with free entry, a bar and a DJ. Just like that, we’ve leveled up your weekend.

The Origins of Argentine Football: A Cemetery Tour

Legendary football, British history and cemeteries, all in one single event. Explore the roots of Argentina’s national passion with The Origins of Argentine Football, a joint guided tour through the British and Chacarita cemeteries.

Starting at the British Cemetery, visitors will visit the grave of Alexander Watson Hutton, the founder of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and a pioneer of the sport in the country. The walk continues to Chacarita Cemetery to visit the Panteón de las Glorias de Boca Juniors (Boca Juniors Glories’ Pantheon) and the Recinto de Personalidades. Highlights include the final resting places of legends like José Amalfitani, Antonio Vespucio Liberti, and Adolfo Pedernera. Note that the event is cancelled in case of rain.

Buenos Aires’ cinephile temple Sala Lugones is holding a 4-screenings series of Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece Taxi Driver to celebrate the film’s 50th anniversary. Written by Paul Schrader and starring Robert De Niro, the film about an alienated Vietnam veteran roaming the gritty New York City nights won the Golden Palm in Cannes that year and became one of the landmark films of the 20th century. Any similarities with today’s urban zeitgeist are probably not a coincidence.

The amazing Cine York presents ¡Extra Extra! Periodismo en el cine, a series that highlights the historical relationship between journalism and cinema and explores newsroom routines, media egos, and the transformation of news into spectacle throughout the 20th century.

Curated by Manuel Barrientos and former Herald writer Federico Poore (creators of the site Journalists in Cinema), the program features some of the greatest comedies ever made, like George Cukor’s The Philadelphia Story, James L. Brooks’ Broadcast News, and Harold Ramis’ now-classic Groundhog Day.

Bleak Week: Contemporary Nightmares on Screen

Bleak Week: Cinema of Despair, the festival organized by the American Cinematheque, lands in Buenos Aires co-organized with Caligari film magazine. This edition features a high-profile residency by director Ari Aster, who will participate in live Q&A sessions at Cine Gaumont following screenings of his films Eddington, Midsommar, and Hereditary.

The diverse program also includes Nicolás Sarquís’s Palo y Hueso and Béla Tarr’s The Turin Horse. Beyond the screen, Aster will join director Laura Casabé for a talk titled Contemporary Nightmares at Arthaus on June 11, offering a deep dive into the genre’s modern evolution.
