i was back home in milwaukee this past week with my old books and i had just about no room in my backpack but i decided to squeeze three books in my bag and force myself to read them again, one a high school required reading book – Brave New World by aldous huxley and then the follow up book of his Brave New World Revisited. i don’t know much about huxley. but he’s one of the few writers who i’ve read more than one of his books and i think his father was a priest or something and the Doors named their band after his book The Doors of Perception, excellent title to define what happens when you take hallucinogenics – those doors open and our senses became really tuned to all outside our mind. it’s like the curtains really open up to the world. I’m convinced that some people, some rare breeds, need no hallucinogenics to fully experience it all, but then again the old tribes found hallucinogenics and the shaman took tribal members on a journey, not all tribes, but peyote, ayahuasca. Anyway, huxley died the same the day as JFK, two monumental minds, one extroverted, the other introverted dying within hours of each other and Huxley’s death, no gun shot; instead he had his wife fulfill his request to have LSD injected into him and she did and then a second dose a few hours later and he died. what a way to die. i bet he said “thank you” as his last words. i’ll try and read Brave New World but i’m more interested in his follow up book years later, Brave New World Revisited to discuss the themes he included in the novel, one of my favorite chapters is propaganda in a democracy what is happening now in extremes maybe not even huxley imagined.

the other book is Nausea by Sartre. i remember a line in that book when Sartre says something about willing oneself happy and that idea never left me as i pound my third glass of coffee this morning.

i went to the brewers game wednesday afternoon. went with my dad. we took a shuttle bus from The Brat House Bar in shorewood which is the neighborhood where the Zucker brothes are from. the ones who directed or wrote that movie Airplane from the 70’s, classic slapstick that even has Mrs. Cleaver speaking jive and there are even subtitles!! comic genius that movie. anyway, that was one hell of a baseball game. my dad’s best friend gave us the tickets and they were staring down the third base line. i didn’t mean to include the guy’s bald head in the photo but it turned out to be a good photo with Bernie’s slide included. we could see it all, except the right field corner and this guy for the cardinals had a no hitter into the 8th inning. Dustin May is his name and he looked great out there, changing speeds and fluid motion and maybe it was a perfect game? and i say maybe because the only baserunner reached on a catcher’s interference so i was wondering if that destroys a perfect game which i’m sure it does and what a bummer to be that catcher, but he could probably buy a few rounds of beer and the team would laugh about it. do players drink at bars anymore? the bar life has become terribly expensive i remember 10 dollar pitchers.now they served all these beers in different glasses which i guess depends on the beer. all these different IPA’s. probably has to do with beer making chemistry. i just know about pint glasses. i love those and at the bars i went to, they weren’t interested in pouring my beers into a pint glass. ….next time in milwaukee i’ll drink miller, a 6 pack before the bar and then sip IPA’s at the bar….i think it was lao tsu who said –

“in times of peace prepare for war and in times of war prepare for peace.”

i’m just following orders.

anyway, the brewers were trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the 8th and i think i remember most of what happened. there was a double by Garret Mitchell and a bunt by Rengifo that was perfect and ended up as a single, a grounder that coulda gone as a shortstop error, a base hit by Yelich to tie the game and then an error, again by the shortstop and the winning run scored. i know it’s ugly to win on errors but it was a classic Pat Murphy win, low scoring come from behind the old station to station ball and the brewers winner Aaron Ashby is now 9-0 and he’s only started one game!!!! he’s been a brewers talk about player for three years and he does have stuff that moves. a reverse curve ball which i think is a screw ball or is it a forkball? i always mix up the two, but 9-0!! Hello Elroy Face. the brewers starter Chad patrick i think that’s his name? worked out of multiple jams and so it was a time machine game too with thoughts of Pete Vukovich doing his Houdini acts of escape.
